It is that time of year again. Spring Breakers will soon converge on North Padre Island and Port Aransas. It seems winter is still trying to hang on in South Texas this year. Hopefully will we start to see warming tempatures now that it is March.

Cold water and air tempatures haved pushed fish into deeper water. Slow and then a little slower retrieve of hard plastic lures or corkys might catch fish in intracoastal or channels. If sun holds and tempatures warm going into the week look for fish along the edge of deep water in the afternoons

Fishing forecast looks good for Sunday and Monday with activity forecasted to fall into the poor range middle to late in the week. Red tide seems to have blown out of the area with strong north and west winds from last week.

North Padre Beaches and the South end of Mustang Island have continued to have red tide for the first part of October 2009. The red tide has killed many fish in addition to making the beach going not to pleasent. Irritation of eyes and respiratory discomfort are part of the beach experience for now.

The cool front that has blown in this week will hopefully blow the red tide out of the local beaches. Local beaches in Corpus Christi and on Corpus Christi beach did not seem affected by red tide when I looked at them today

Red Tide seems to be getting worse. Dead fish along the beach from Padre Island National Seashore to Mustang Island including Bob Hall Pier and Packery Channel. Discolered beachfront water along with red tide syptoms of burning eyes and coughing.

Hopefully cold front coming in next few days will clear out the Red Tide.

Memorial Day Weekend has an encouraging fishing forecast. Winds are forecasted to be calm with no rain forecasted for the weekend. Solunar fishing tables show excellent fishing activity with best times in the middle of the day.

Speckled trout, redfish and kingfish have been caught off the Jetties with live finger mullet and ribbonfish.

The week starting May 3, 2009 starts out with a small cool front blowing in. Northeast winds will blow for a few days which could effect fishing conditions. Beginning Tuesday the fishing is forecasted to be very good through the weekend.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are forecasted to be the best fishing days with the peak activity late morning through early afternoon

Decided to include a photo of this Saturday, April 4th, 2009 fishing trip. I decided to use the fishing guides (solunar tables) for Mustang Island as my fishing guide. The fishing for today was forecasted to only be "Average" or one star. The the Major or best time for fishing was between 8:oo -10:oo in the morning and another major late in the evening.

I was on the water fishing the backside of Mustang Island by Shamrock Cove by about 7:15 Saturday morning. After a few casts with a topwater I caught a small trout. Switched over to a pearl/chartreus sand eel and started catching bigger fish. Working along the edge in about 3-4 feet of water I hooked up multiple times and decided to keep the fish in the accompanying photo.

I was at home with fish cleaned and ready to eat by 10:15 am and putting up this blog post by 11:45am. Not bad for an "Average" fishing forecast. Will have to try this same spot when the forecast is for a "5 star" day! It's good to be On Padre and Mustang Island.

The up coming fishing week beginning April 05, 2009 looks pretty good all week long. The biggest obstacle to good fishing this week could be strong winds as Spring cool fronts move into the area. Be sure to check upcoming weather conditions before getting on the water.

The week of beginning March 29, 2009 is starting off with windy conditions as the South winds have increased. Game and Fish Activity table is forecasting this week to be average for fishing with minimal solunar activity. Weather conditions through mid week could make fishing more dificult with high wind conditions.

Look for improving conditions by the weekend.

Last week saw good fishing conditiond until a strong West-Nothrwest blew in Friday night. Spanish Mackeral and small sharks were still being caught at Horace Caldwell Fishing Pier and Bob Hall Fishing Pier. Spring Tides have brought substantial amount of baits back into the surf, bays and Laguna.

The week beginning March 22, 2009 looks to be a great fishing week. Spring tides have been bringing in bait fish with game fish following. Solunar fish forecast are predicting excellent fishing beginning Wednesday through the weekend. Mornings should produce decent fishing with the mid to late afternoon being the MAJOR fish feeding activity.

Winds are forecasted to increase from the Southeast to look for protected fishing locations for the afternoon. Air and water tempatures are continuing to rise now that Spring is here.

Last week fishing reports from Bob Hall and Horace Caldwell Pier reported Spanish Mackeral, small trout and small sharks being caught from the pier. Friday, Saturday and Sunday saw good fishing which might continue this week if the waters of the Gulf of Mexico don't become to churned up with the winds. Trout were also caught on the backside of Mustang Island with plum/chartreuse sand eels. Pompano and Spanish Mackeral reported to be caught between 15-20 miles on the Padre Island National Seashore.

Corpus Christi beaches came alive today as the cold air gave way to Sunshine and warming tempatures along the Gulf og Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay. The Emerald Beach in downtown Corpus Christi was alive with Spring Breakers. Swimming, volleyball, water craft and sunbathers were all along the seawall and Magee Beach. The beaches of North Padre IsLand were just starting to fill in with the first wave of Spring Break 2009. If 2009 is like all the past years the beaches of Mustang Island and Padre Island will be filled to max capacity from the city of Port Aransas to Corpus Christi Texas.

The weather is clearing and beginning to warm up as the first day of Spring draws near this week. Warm weather, clean beaches and fishing that is just beginning to heat up are just a few reasons to head to North Padre Island and Mustang Island this Spring Break.

Camping on the beach or in the dunes at the Mustang Island State Park is a great way to spend Spring Break and avoid the crowds and traffic of some of the other beaches in Port Aransas and Corpus Christi.

The week beginning Sunday March 15, 2009 starts off with cold air tempatures and waters that have cooled down from last week. The solunar fishing activity tables are calling for slow activity the beginning of the week then increasing fish feeding activity beginning Thursday the 19th and running through the weekend.

The weather is forecasted to begin a warming trend on Monday March 16th. After the recent cold weather blast fish could be more responsive to this warming trend than is reflected in the solunar tables.

TIPs for this weeks fishing: Start the morning hours fishing deeper water or the edge of flats along deeper water. As the day warms up begin moving onto the flats as fish enjoy warming up in the sun also. Spring time fishing can be productive at SuperFlats in Port Aransas, Shamrock Cove or Packery Channel Jetties as fish move back into the Bay system from the Gulf.

Spring Break 2009

Cold weather On Padre Island has left area beaches empty. The beach crowds on this opening Saturday of the largest week in Spring Break look more like a Monday morning in the middle of January. On White Cap Beach there were two people! South Packery Beach had four cars and two dogs!

Never to fear that Spring Break 2009 is lost though. Area weather forecasts call for Spring Break 2009 weather to reach the low 80's by Monday and stay warm through the entire week. Sounds a lot better than Wisconsins forecast for next week in the high 30's and still frozen. Sunshine, no rain and no school. Sounds like being on the beaches of North Padre Island will be the perfect place to be. Speaking of beaches, the rain we have had along with a lot of hard work by Nueces County Beach crews have got the beaches in great condition. Soft sand has been pushed up to the dunes. The rain has compacted sands for driving and the beaches are free of trash and debris.

This evening was out at Bob Hall Fishing Pier enjoying the Spring weather and waves. The beach had the feel of summer with the parking lot full and people enjoying the sun, surf and sand.

Those fishing on the pier were catching whiting, small speckled trout and one to two foot bonnethead sharks. Everytime I looked over a the pier two or three fishermen had their lines bent over pulling in another fish or shark. Good day all around on North Padre Island

North Padre Landmark

Driving over the JFK bridge onto the Island I couldn't help but notice the towering presence of the North Padre Island water tower under construction next to Sea Pines. Decided to drive over to the tower site to take a closer look. Interestingly the tower construction is being completed by a company called "Landmark" construction. The new tower will hopefully resolve the lack of water pressure experienced by Island residents and visitors. Maybe the days of showering under a trickling stream of water and going to work with soap still in your hair are behind us. One thing for certain is the new tower will have a presence on the North Padre Island skyscape.

Spring Break 2009

Next week Spring Break 2009 launches with it peak time the week of March 16th. College Students and families alike will flood onto the beaches of North Padre Island and Mustang Island. For one month a year the population of these island swells as spring breakers engage in the beach rituals that have endured for decades. It is expected that Port Aransas and North Padre will draw larger crowds for 2009 due to the catastrophic damages of Hurricane Ike in 2008 to Galveston Island.

Anyone who has grown up on the beaches of North Padre Island views the coming of Spring Break as the turning of a season. The pouring of vehicles, boats and crowds along with airplanes flying the Gulf of Mexico shoreline displaying banners with slogans such as "T-shirts -- 3 for $15" or "20 cent drink specials @ the local Bar" has come to symbolize that Spring is here! Much like others around the nation view the melting of snow, the cherry blossoms or the growth of bulb plants as a change of season the storming of the beaches with college students in bikinis, four wheels drives and the energy of youth makes it clear that Spring is here and Summer is right around the corner. It is good to be on Padre Island !!

The last few days here on North Padre Island have felt a lot like Spring. The most recent event I have noticed that tells me Spring is right aroundthe corner is all the talk of fishing as well as all the people fishing. Driving by the local fishing piers each day and night they are packed withe people. At the store, local restaurants and about anywhre people gather, the talk of fishing is in the air. So even as we get another cold front today we know that Spring is near and the fishing is already starting to heat up!

Beach conditions remain some what "winter-ish"

on North Padre Island as tempatures have stayed below 70 degrees of late.

Driving conditions on area beaches remain challenging at times with softer sand than usual due to the ongoing lack of rain in the area.

Shelling has been fairly poor, crowds light, seaweed and jellyfish light.

We will try to keep beach conditions updated on a weekly basis as conditions are always changing.

This is the first post to our blog. With the start of www.OnPadreIsland.com over a year ago we decided it would be a good idea to star a blog to keep our readers up to date on current happenings on North Padre Island and the surrounding area. We recently
just updated the website with information on
Padre Island National Seashore. There are photos and descriptions already and we will have with more to come.
